How To Troubleshoot Your System For Memory Problems In Windows 7

Windows 7 includes built-in features to help you identify and diagnose problems with memory.

If you suspect a computer has a memory problem that isn’t being automatically detected, you can run the Windows Memory Diagnostics utility by completing the following steps:

Step 1: – Click Start, type ” mdsched.exe in the Search box, and then press Enter.

Step 2: – Choose whether to restart the computer and run the tool immediately or schedule the tool to run at the next restart.
Windows Memory Diagnostics runs automatically after the computer restarts and performs a standard memory test automatically. If you want to perform fewer  or more tests, press F1, use the Up and Down arrow keys to set the Test Mix as Basic, Standard, or Extended, and then press F10 to apply the desired settings and resume testing.

When testing is completed, the computer restarts automatically. You’ll see the test results when you log on.

Note : if a computer crashes because of failing memory, and Windows Memory Diagnostics detects this, the system will prompt you to schedule a memory test the next time the computer is restarted.

BitLocker and BitLocker To Go in Windows 7

Microsoft introduced BitLocker in Windows Vista and it was one of the most important security features introduced with it. Since Laptop/Notebook theft is increasing day by day, Microsoft introduced this feature which helps you to encrypt the whole hard drive in your computer. So even if a computer or a notebook is being stolen from an organization, they don’t have to worry about their data or any compliance regulations as no one will be able to recover the encrypted data.

Now, the usage of USB drives has increased tremendously. Day by day the size of the USB drives shrinks whereas the capacity expands. The more capacity means you will be storing more data in it, and the smaller in size makes you to lose it more easily. As a data protection solution Microsoft has introduced a new feature called BitLocker To Go in Windows 7. BitLocker To Go helps you to encrypt your USB drives so even if you lose, it will only be the hardware and no one will be able to access your encrypted information. Windows 7 comes with both BitLocker and BitLocker To Go.

Let’s have a look at on how to encrypt your USB drives using BitLocker To Go in Windows 7

Basically, what happens when you enable BitLocker To Go on a USB drive is that it encrypts the drive and assign a password. So every time you plug in the drive you will be prompted to enter the password in order to access (read and write) the drive.

Once you encrypt your USB drive using BitLocker To Go you should be able to access the drive on computers running Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP provided that you enter the password correctly.

How do you do this?

* Plug in your USB drive and open My Computer .

* Right click on the USB Drive and select “Turn on BitLocker”.

* You will get the BitLocker initialization box.

* Once the initialization is done you will be asked to enter a password or you can use a smart card authentication (we will be using a password here)

* You will be prompted to save the key or print the key (for recovery purposes, in case you lose or forget the password) .

* Save the key (we will be saving the key here).

* After you confirm your password and click next you will be prompted to click start encryption .

* The encrypting process begins.

* And the completion .

* Once you click close on the completion window, your My Computer window should show a new icon for your USB Drive.

Now that your USB Drive is encrypted, Lets see on what happens when you plug this on to a Windows 7 machine

When you plug in a USB drive which has BitLocker To Go turned on, instead of the default autorun you will be prompted to enter the password to open the drive.

When you plug in to a Windows Vista or a Windows 7, it will give you the autorun Window where you will have to choose and run the BitLocker To Go reader. Once you do then you will be able to enter the password and access your drive.
Note : When you use the BitLocker reader to access the USB Drive either using Windows XP or Windows Vista you will ONLY be able to read data which is on the USB Drive and copy files and folders form the USB Drives to your computer. You WONT be able to write directly to a USB Drive protected by BitLocker To Go using XP or Vista. For this you will require a Windows 7 (to add and remover files).

I hope this is helpful to all.

How To Activate Windows 7 online

Once you install Windows 7, you need to activate it before the 30 days trial period expires. Although you can install Windows 7 without providing the product key, and although you can extend the grace period to 120 days . you will reach a point where you need to activate your Windows 7 and to verify that your copy of Windows is genuine .

Activation helps verify that your copy of Windows is genuine and that it has not been used on more computers than the Microsoft Software License Terms allow.  You will also be legitimate to download Microsoft Updates for Windows and other Microsoft products, as Windows has to pass the genuine validation process in order to be able to download Microsoft products and their updates.

Follow the below steps :

Note: make sure that your machine is able to connect to the internet before proceeding.

  1. Click the Start Button      > then right click on Computer > then click on Properties

  2. The System page will open where you can view basic information about your computer. At the bottom of this page and under the Windows Activation section, the remaining days of the grace period is displayed along with the option to activate Windows, in a previous article, I have written about Extending Windows 7 Activation Period from 30 to 120 Days , if you no longer want to extend the trial period and need to activate Windows 7 , then click on the link XX days to activate. Activate Windows now  ,where XX is the remaining days.

  3. On the Windows Activation page, click on Activate Windows online now . If you want to postpone this process for the time being, then click on Ask me later .

  4. Once you click on Activate Windows now, If you have already provided a valid product key while installing Windows 7, then the product key will be verified and after few moments you will receive a confirmation that your Windows copy has been activated.

  5. Else, if you have not provided a product key while installing Windows 7 , then you will need to type the product key which consist of  25 characters. You can find your product key on your computer or inside the Windows package. After typing your product key inside the relevant textbox, click on Next

  6. The process of verifying the product key will start.

Once the product key is verified, you will receive a confirmation page where it tells you that activation was successful, and explains to you the benefits of activating your Windows copy.
